Poem Writing Tips and Tricks- Rhyming Poetry

'Poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings: it takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquillity.'

--- William Wordsworth

Poetry is much more than just a form of writing; it’s an art. Poetry is a form of literature expressing ideas, feelings or emotions in a beautiful language, almost like a song. Rhyming words are one of the essential elements that make poetry look and sound good.

Poetry can convey thoughts, beliefs, and opinions and tell stories.

What is a Rhyme?

Rhyme is a repetition of similar or identical sounds at the end of two or more words. Writing rhyming words in your poems will help you create a unique pattern, giving them a sense of rhythm and flow. Even if you don’t have an extensive vocabulary, you can still create attractive poems with rhyming words.

Types of Rhyme

Rhyme can be classified into four main types: perfect rhyme, slant rhyme, near rhyme and rich rhyme.

Perfect Rhyme/Exact Rhyme –

Perfect rhymes are also known as exact rhymes because the sound of the words is similar at the end. For example, ‘moon’ and ‘June’.

Slant Rhyme –

Slant rhymes are also known as imperfect rhymes because the sound of the words is not exactly similar, but just close enough to be called rhymes. For example, ‘weather’ and ‘gather’.

Near Rhyme –

Near rhymes are also known as half rhymes because the words are not completely similar but close enough to be called a rhyme. For example, ‘sky’ and ‘die’.

Rich Rhyme –

Rich rhymes are rather complex as they involve multiple syllables that must match in sound for the words to be called rhyming. For example, ‘entrancement’ and ‘advancement’.

There are many other types of rhyme schemes, for example, eye, masculine, feminine, etc.

Eye rhyme

When the words look like they rhyme but don’t actually sound similar. For example, ‘love’ and ‘move

Masculine rhyme

When the last syllable in a word is stressed, it rhymes with another word. For example, ‘eat’ and ‘seat.

Feminine rhyme

when two words have the same sound, and it includes an extra syllable at the end. For example, ‘hope’ and ‘elope’.

Using Rhyming Words

Rhyming words can be used in poetry for a variety of reasons. To create a pleasing sound, make your poem more attractive and easier to read/listen to. To create a rhythm, make your poem more enjoyable and memorable. To draw attention to the main idea of your poem, highlight it through the repetition of words and sounds.

Writing rhyming words can be difficult at times, but using them correctly in your poetry can help you create something beautiful. Practice writing rhyming words and try to come up with creative ways of using them in your poems. You’ll find that it will make a huge difference in the quality of your work.
